      Toothpaste

Toothpaste is an essential ingredient for healthy teeth and gums, but manufacturers often bombard us with scientific jargon to try and convince us of the better product. Below is a general guide to different types of toothpaste, and what the most beneficial ingredients are.

Ingredients

The most important ingredient that your toothpaste should contain is fluoride. It helps to strengthen the tooth enamel (the hard, white outer coating of your teeth) and combats the effect of acids produced during the fermentation of bacteria from sugars. Other ingredients of toothpaste include abrasives, detergents, flavoring, pH buffers, water, flavoring and coloring agents. Abrasives are required to remove plaque; they usually take the form of hydrated silica. Toothpaste also often contains an antimicrobial agent designed to kill oral bacteria. Desensitising toothpastes often contain strontium chloride and potassium nitrate. The purpose of these agents is to block tiny canals that pass through your teeth and connect to the inner nerves. This in turn reduces the severity and frequency of toothache.

Tartar

Tartar-control toothpastes are also commercially available, which help to prevent the build-up of tartar (hardened plaque) on your teeth. Tartar accelerates the tooth decay process, and discolours the enamel of your teeth. It should be noted that tartar control toothpaste cannot remove tartar already that has already built up on the teeth; in this case the tartar ca only be removed by a professional cleaning (by your dentist).

Baking Soda

Toothpastes are available which contain baking soda, which acts as a mild abrasive. There is no scientific proof that baking soda toothpastes are any more beneficial than other types of toothpaste, but if the taste or feel of a particular toothpaste motivates you to brush more frequently, then it is a better choice for you. Some toothpastes often combine baking soda with peroxide. Again, there is no scientific proof that this type of toothpaste is more beneficial than other types, but the “bubbling” sensation experienced by users may lead them to believe otherwise.

Sensitive teeth

For those with particularly sensitive teeth or gums, desensitising toothpastes are available, and can combat mild cases of tooth hypersensitivity. These toothpastes however usually take around four to six weeks of regular use to provide a noticeable difference.
